I cycled through Nicaragua as part of a longer bike tour. Here's my blog posts and travel tips from cycling in Nicaragua, as well as my cycling route.

Nicaragua Bicycle Touring

I'd only spent two days and one night cycling in Honduras before I entered Nicaragua. This was back in 2010, and was part of my 18 month bike tour from Alaska to Argentina.

It was my first time in the country, and I wasn't quite sure what Nicaragua had in stall for me. To be honest, I knew very little about the country.

My cycling route through Nicaragua

My most vivid memories are of volcanoes and lakes, strong wind and heat. My route wasn't exactly designed to take in the best of the country. In fact, I didn't really have a map!

As with much of my bike tour, I was on a tight schedule due to lack of funds, and so the aim was really just to cycle through Nicaragua as quickly as possible. Even so, I took one extra day off in order to rest my legs.

In the end, I spent seven days and six nights in Nicaragua when cycling through. During my time there, I kept a blog post a day as I did throughout my PanAmerican bike tour. You can find links to each day's bike tour toward the end of this article.

Nicaragua – Quick facts and travel tips

Currency: Cordoba
Cycling conditions: Wind - Lots and lots of wind!
Favourite food: Breakfast of huevos revueltos, gallo pinto, fried plantains and fried cheese
Beaches: None where I was cycling!
Wild Camping: I found reasonably priced accommodation around the 10 dollars a night or cheaper mark.
Costs: I don't remember. A reminder I should keep better notes when bike touring!
