Santorini Island Travel Tips

A few travel tips for visiting the Greek island of Santorini after Paros:
  • Ferries sail from the main port, Parikia in Paros. Arriving ferries dock at Athinios port, a few kilometres from Fira in Santorini.

  • If your hotel in Santorini does not arrange to collect you from the port, you'll need to either take a bus or taxi. Buses are scheduled to meet arriving ferries, but are very busy. Getting from the ferry and on to a bus can be a chaotic experience. If you have a lot of luggage, it is probably better to pre-book a taxi from Santorini port to your hotel instead.

  • For rooms to rent in Santorini, I've a guide here on Where to stay in Santorini that goes into the different locations on the island, and which one might be best for you.

  • Areas to consider staying include Kamari, Fira, Imerovigli, Monolithos, Oia, Perissa, and Firostefani. If you are traveling to Santorini in the height of summer, I advise reserving places to stay in Santorini a month or so in advance. If you want somewhere with a sunset view, check this out: Santorini Sunset Hotels.

  • In my opinion, Santorini does not have great beaches. However, if you want a little beach time while on the island, take your choice from : Mesa Pigadia, Perivolos, Kamari, Red Beach, Monolithos, and Perissa. I've a full guide here: Beaches in Santorini

  • Ferryscanner is perhaps the easiest site to use when it comes to booking Ferry tickets online. Greek ferry tickets rarely sell out, but even so, I suggest booking your tickets 2 -3 months in advance whenever possible.
