Can you take a day trip from Santorini to Mykonos?

Whether or not you can make a round trip on the same day between Santorini and Mykonos is a commonly asked question. And the simple answer is no.

Even if you take the first ferry out from Santorini, the timings leave you almost no time on the island before the last boat back from Mykonos to Santorini.

It's a better option to just include Mykonos on an island hopping itinerary and spend a couple of days there. Only have time for one island? Take a look at my comparison of Mykonos vs Santorini.

Are there really no direct flights from Santorini to Mykonos?

Although Santorini airport is international, there is no direct flight with Mykonos. If for some reason you don't like the idea of being on the small ferries (which is understandable on windy Meltemi days!), you could fly via Athens.

Basically, you'd have to get a flight from Santorini to Athens, and then take another flight from Athens to Mykonos. If everything lines up you might arrive in Mykonos within five hours. It would be more expensive though.

Take a look at Skyscanner for flight options.

Santorini Departure Port

The Santorini ferry to Mykonos departs from Athinios Port in Santorini. The best way to get to the port is either by public transport (bus), or to pre-book a taxi. If you've rented a car, you might be able to leave it at the port.

It's important to remember that it won't just be your boat to Mykonos that is sailing from the port - there will be many other ferries coming and going to other Greek islands.

This means that you can expect Santorini port to be busy. Very busy! There may also be heavy traffic heading down to the port from the main road.

I would advise you plan to be at the port at least an hour before departure. There's only about 25 taxis on the island, so I recommend using Welcome to book taxis in Santorini.

Would you happen to know which ferry's from Santorini to Mykonos have an outside deck? The travel time is not an issue. We would rather have time outside than get there quickly inside.

    1. Dave BriggsAuthor5 February 2022

As far as I know, none of the ferries on this Santorini Mykonos route have an outside deck. The Santorini Palace does have a small one, but it is closed off when the ferry is actually sailing.

Hi Do you know if they offer food and drinks during the trip

    1. Dave BriggsAuthor20 July 2022

There's normally a small cafe on board where you can buy food and drinks

  3. Mir5 March 2023

Hi Dave, Do you know if there is a sailing trip from Santorini to Mykonos? (Instead of taking the ferry?)

And: I am not sure about how many nights to stay in Santorini and Mykonos. 3 in S and 4 in M? Or the other way around? Can you advise?

    Kind regards, Mir

    1. Dave BriggsAuthor8 March 2023

      Hi Mir,

There's no realistic sailing trip (other than a multi-day multi island yachting trip probably) between Santorini and Mykonos because of the distance. The ferries are all high speed. How many nights to stay depends on what you want to do and see, and also what time of year you want to visit. There's plenty to do on both islands. Spend longer in Mykonos if you are a beach and party person.

  4. Susan9 March 2023

There are three ferries a day from Santorini to Mykonos. Why is the first one longer than the two others? Is it slower or does it make a stop? I read that after the first trip the ferries run notoriously late. Is this what you have found?

    1. Dave BriggsAuthor11 March 2023

Hi Susan, If it's the Fast Ferries Thunder you are referring to, I think it makes stops at Ios and Paros along the way. It's also a bigger ship, so that accounts for the slower travel times. In general, ferries run to schedule. The only delays are due to weather (normally strong winds in the Cyclades), and if there is a problem with the boat. None are predictable in advance though! The faster ferries from Santorini to Mykonos are more likely to get there on time, especially the 2 hour crossings, as I don't think they make any stops on the way

  5. Bhatt2 October 2023

Is there any ferries from Santorini to Mykonos on the last week of March 2024

    1. Dave BriggsAuthor3 October 2023

This year there were Santorini to Mykonos ferries on Thursday's and Sunday's in March. The 2024 ferry timetables have not been released yet, so there is no way to tell for sure about March Santorini Mykonos crossings. I think ferry timetables for this route would be released only around December. Best to keep checking every week
