How to visit Milos from the UK

Some of my top tips on visiting Milos from the UK include getting a flight to Athens, and then another flight to Milos, or flying to Santorini and then taking a ferry to Milos.

Since writing the first travel guide book to Milos, I'm often asked what is the best way to get to Milos from the UK.

There are no direct flights from the UK to Milos. In fact, although Milos has a small airport it is domestic only, so you can't fly into Milos from any other country.

This means you have to accept that your journey from the UK to Milos will involve at lease two stages. In most cases it will either be two flights, or it will be a flight and a ferry.

Last year, my nephew visited Milos from the UK, and found it easiest to first get a flight to Santorini, and then take a ferry from Santorini to Milos. For him, the flight and ferry times worked out great.

If they don't for you, other options include getting a flight from the UK to Athens, and then a flight from Athens to Milos. You could also take a ferry from Athens (Piraeus Port) to Milos.

Here's a little more detail about your UK to Milos travel options:

1. UK to Athens, then Athens to Milos

This is the most direct and common route to reach Milos.

Step 1: UK to Athens

• Fly from major UK airports (e.g., London, Manchester, Edinburgh) to Athens International Airport.
• Airlines: British Airways, EasyJet, Aegean Airlines, and others offer direct flights. I recommend Aegean Airlines if you have the choice, as they have excellent service!
• Flight duration: Approximately 3.5 to 4 hours.
• Check prices for flights on Skyscanner, but book directly with the airline as it is usually cheaper.

Step 2: Athens to Milos

Option A: Fly from Athens to Milos

• Take a domestic flight from Athens to Milos Island National Airport.
• Airlines: Olympic Air and Sky Express operate this route. I've found both airlines to be good, but expect a smaller propeller plane!
• Flight duration: About 45 minutes.
• Note: Check baggage allowances, as small planes often have stricter limits - and they ARE strict about it!

Option B: Ferry from Athens (Piraeus) to Milos

• Take a ferry from Piraeus port to Milos. I've previously sailed on the Minoan Lines Festos Palace and think it's a great ship.
• Ferry companies: SeaJets, Aegean Speed Lines, and others.
• Journey time: 3-7 hours, depending on the type of ferry (high-speed or conventional).
• Frequency: Ferries depart regularly, especially during peak season.
• Book ferry tickets online with: Ferryscanner

2. UK to Mykonos or Santorini, then Ferry to Milos

This option allows you to visit other popular Greek islands en route to Milos.

Step 1: UK to Mykonos or Santorini

• Fly from major UK airports to Mykonos International Airport or Santorini (Thira) International Airport.
• Several airlines offer direct seasonal flights, including EasyJet, Jet2, and TUI.

Step 2: Ferry to Milos

• Take a ferry from Santorini or Mykonos to Milos.
• Journey time: 1.5 to 7 hours, depending on the ferry type and route.
• Frequency: Multiple daily connections during peak season.
• Book ferry tickets in advance with: Ferryscanner

Tips

• Book your Athens-Milos (or other island) connection in advance, especially during peak summer season.
• Consider spending a night in Athens or another island if transit times are tight.
• Check ferry schedules carefully, as they can vary seasonally.
